Here is another Peta campaign which I endorse totally and the subject is horse carriages and more specifically the ones in NYC!!
http://www.peta.org/b/thepetafiles/archive/2011/11/08/third-horse-in-two-weeks-collapses-in-nyc.aspx?utm_campaign=1111%20Third%20Horse%20in%20Two%20Weeks%20Collapses%20in%20NYC&utm_source=PETA%20Facebook&utm_medium=Promo
This was triggered by yet another horse who dropped dead from exhaustion in the middle of the street. I think I have already said enough, just this simple fact that horses drop dead in the middle of a city because they are mistreated and not well fed, should make you scream and feel infuriated!
So hurry up, open a new tab and send an email to NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg and ask him to ban horse carriages. It will take you 2 min and will be a huge help! Hopefully knowing that Mr Bloomberg has been pet friendly in the past, he will once more defend animal rights!

And if you are still not convinced and think that this was just one isolated case, think again! It happens every few weeks. Horses are just the same as cats and dogs, they are pets. But even more than that, they are pets who are so devoted to their masters that they obey and serve them loyally until death. As a reward they are mistreated.
- Concrete and paved roads are the worse for their hooves. Of course the shoes (which are apparently special and have an extra rubber coating) help out (and even at that, many specialists now agree that having your horse shooed 24/7 is not the best thing either), but most of the time, the owner of horse drawn carriages don't really care about that and do not maintain the horses well shooed. The bigger problem is that concrete and roads is one of the hardest surface to work on as it does not absorb shocks very well (yes each step you or a horse take has an impact and is a shock). For example, have you ever gone to ikea and walked on their concrete floor for 5h? You get home, your feet are DEAD, you can barely walk... now imagine a horse who works 70h a week on that surface how his legs, tendons and joints must suffer.
- Their conditions are so bad that the average working life for a horse who pulls carriages is 4 years, when you know a horse normally lives until its late 20s.
- Mixing horses and cars especially in a city like NY which evidently has the highest rate of accidents induced by horse carriages in the USA is incredibly dangerous. Some of these accidents not only result in the death of the horse but also of humans.
- Finally, if only they were well treated afterwards, but you can of course imagine that the horses are often found suffering from starvation. Their stalls are often small filthy rooms not even tall enough for them to stand up properly, let alone move. And if they're lucky enough to survive, when they get too old, they are most often sent to the slaughter-house.
As I am hoping you now see, this is a grave case of cruelty to animals and something has to be done to stop it!
If you still want more convincing, have a look at this report:

- Unfortunately this is not a new problem. It's been going on for a while. http://advocacy.britannica.com/blog/advocacy/2008/03/the-plight-of-new-york-city-carriage-horses/
So hopefully this time if more people protest, a solution will be found, but it can't be done if people don't sign. So please, again, write a mail to NYC mayor and sign the petition!

Here is the message I personally sent him:
" Dear Mr Bloomberg, this message is about the horse carriages in NYC. Please put an end to this. The conditions are awful for the horses, their hooves are not made to be on concrete all day and they should not be stored for the night in a closet just like dirty laundry. These animals are mistreated and this is definitely a case of cruelty to animals which should be condemned according to the Animal Welfare Act. I do not live in NYC but I visited it several times and I will again! Your city is so gorgeous, tourists do not need to take a ride on a carriage, especially because the only thing you can enjoy is car exhaust smell. Additionally, having horses carriages in the middle of NYC traffic is really a danger to everyone, the horses, the riders and the driver! So banning these horse carriages will not hurt anyone but will help these poor animals tremendously. Please, I know you have been pet friendly already in the past so please do it again and stop this atrocity! Thank you very much for your time. "
Because horses are supposed to look like that:
Note that Peta is not the only organization fighting for this cause, but I believe that because they are more famous and they make more noise, it might lead to more efficient results!
Let's hope!!
